God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren is one of my favorite children's books about Christmas. It is one of a series of God Gave Us books by Bergren. In God Gave Us Christmas, Little Cub wants to know if Santa invented Christmas and wants to go and find Santa. Mama lets Little Cub know that God gave us Christmas and that while Santa is hard to find that they can go and find God because he is everywhere. And so Mama and Little Cub begin their journey to find God. Mama shows Little Cub how God reveals himself to us through His creation. Bergren gently and lovingly tells this story of Mama and Little Cub and addresses Santa for our children in a way that they can best understand. When Little Cub asks if God gave us Santa Mama responds, "Santa Claus reminds us about many good things like generosity and care. But it is God and Jesus that we celebrate most come Christmas. We always want to thank God for giving us Christmas." I love how she helps parents address the issue of Santa in a loving way while keeping the focus on Jesus. Mama uses this journey to teach Little Cub that Jesus is the best gift of all and that he came that first Christmas for all of us. This book reminds children of the true meaning of Christmas and just how much God loves them.
More books in the God Gave Us series include: God Gave Us You, God Gave Us Two and God Gave Us Heaven. I love them all and hope you will too.
Blessings,
J
