Container Garden

I love fresh fruits & veggies. It's one of my favorite things about summer. I remember spending summer days helping my dad cut okra, pick and shell peas, gravel potatoes, shuck corn and gather tomatoes. I was always the most excited about the watermelon though. I loved watching them grow from those adorable little miniature fruits into full grown juicy sweet goodness. Even today, when summer rolls around, I start looking forward to the gifts I'm sure to receive from my dad's garden. But living seven hours away from my parents means fewer trips home and fewer of those gifts. So, a couple of summers ago I decided to grow a couple of different types of tomatoes in containers on my deck and had great success. They were wonderful for salad but not for slicing for sandwiches. Tomato sandwiches are my favorite things to eat in the summer followed closely by tomato biscuits so having an abundance of fresh slicing tomatoes is a must. Last summer I never got around to planting anything and really missed those tomatoes. So this year I decided to try container gardening again. And I decided to add a little variety.
I planted Cherry tomatoes for salads, green bell peppers, strawberries, sweet peppers, jalapeno peppers(for The Man) and regular tomatoes for sandwiches and such. I figured this was a good variety to start with although I may still add a few herbs next week. I can hardly wait until they're ready. Actually, I already have a couple of strawberries. They're awfully tiny but its a start.

So, while I still don't get the full abundance and variety of my dad's garden on a regular basis, I'm filling in the gap a bit. I can always pick up the other things at the farmer's market.

One thing I have that we didn't have growing up is a cherry tree.

The cherries are starting to turn now. It won't be long until they're ripe. I can already taste the fresh cherry cobbler. Mmm.

Ahh, That Feels Better

It really doesn't take much to make me happy. I found an online tutorial and changed this to a 3-column blog. I think it looks so much better. I find they feel more spacious, don't you?

Love Notes

Baby Girl is nearing the end of Kindergarten. Over the last few months she's become more comfortable and confident in her writing and spelling. So her favorite thing to do these days is write us all love notes. She will disappear for few minutes and reappear with a note for one of us. She has a stack of sticky notes that she often uses. She'll just walk up and stick the note right on you. I found the note above in a basket in the kitchen where I keep supplies for the little notes I slip into their lunch boxes. It was the first time she'd hidden a note for one of us to find. Such sweetness! I am blessed with such amazing little kids I can hardly stand it. And you know I'm keeping those love notes safely tucked away to enjoy long after my babies are grown.

Scripture Sunday-Happy Mother's Day

Proverbs 31:26-28 ESV
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:

Wishing all the mom's out there a Happy and Blessed Mother's Day!

And Happy Mother's Day to my Mom! I love you!!! Thank you for planting the seeds of faith in my life.

Prayers For Our Country

Today is the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer, created in 1952 by a joint resolution of U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Truman. If you are so inclined, join me in this prayer for our nation by Beth Moore, 2009 Honorary Chairman, from the National Day of Prayer website.

2009 Prayer for Our Nation
by Beth Moore, Honorary Chairman

Father in Heaven,
We lift our eyes toward Your Throne, where You reign in righteousness.
Your Word assures us that when Your people cry out in sincerity and humility, You will never turn a deaf ear to us.
We call upon You now, seeking Your forgiveness and favor.
Look over this fevered landscape and heal us, Lord.
Drop knees to the floor and raise eyes to the sky, for we know where our help comes from.
Unite these States again in devotion to You, and blur every dividing line.
Do not give us over to our sins. Give us, instead, over to passionate prayer that moves Your heart.
“May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You.”
In the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
Amen

Amen.
